Surrey Loam A loam high in clay is essential for a Cricket square as a light soil would only absorb the force of the ball. Clay Loams have fewer pore spaces therefore less air than light loams and as the clay particles themselves are much smaller they bind together very well. The higher the clay content in the square the faster the surface will play. Loams with very high clay percentages are required at professional venues, but it is important to remember that considerable demand is placed on such wickets which need to last for days of intense play and require considerable maintenance and upkeep. A very fast wicket may not always be appropriate in some situations for instance schools where safety has an equal consideration. It is always advised that the same loam should be used for dressing as that from which the square is constructed. If a change of loam is decided upon then the transfer of materials should be gradual in order that there is no layering which produces root breaks and can lead to the surface "shattering." The close of the various playing seasons allow a period of renovation, particularly whilst the warmer weather is still with us permitting good germination. If the end of season repairs have not been fully completed before the onset of cold weather, don't worry too much. Spring time usually allows plenty of opportunity to make repairs and establish new growth in time for the start of the new playing season. Surrey Loam is screened to 4mm 25kg bags of Surrey Loam delivered direct to you. Ideal for heel marks and repairing cricket wickets.
